THIBODAUX, La. – After having a day off due to weather, the Nicholls State University baseball team was beaten by Southeastern in the final two regular season games on Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE: Nicholls 4, Southeastern 5 (10 inn.)
Game two was a back and forth extra inning thriller that featured multiple lead changes and came down to the wire. Both teams got out the gate quickly scoring in the opening inning. After a SLU home run put them up 1-0,
Narvin Booker Jr. was hit by pitch, scored on a two out wild pitch to tie the game.
Following a scoreless second stanza, the Lions retook their lead with another solo home run. The Red & Gray responded by taking advantage of another Lions' miscue in the ensuing frame as
Andy Miller was hit by pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game at 2.
Southeastern doubled their score with their third home run of the game in the fifth to go up 4-2. The Colonels answered with one run on a
Carter Jenkins base knock in the seventh. Following consecutive 1-2-3 innings from relief pitcher
Joseph Bordelon, senior catcher
Jaden Collura blasted a home run to right field to tie the game at 4. However, the Lions hit their fourth home run of the game to make the final.
Karson Irvin and Jenkins led the Colonels with two hits apiece. Starting pitcher
Alec Sparks struck out four batters while allowing eight hits and four runs in 6.1 innings of work. Bordelon moves to 0-2 on the season as he struck out five batters while allowing one hit in 3.2 innings of action.
GAME TWO: Nicholls 4, Southeastern 19 (7 inn.)
The series finale was an uphill battle for Nicholls as the offense went cold. The Lions scored at least one run in the first six innings. SLU set the tone with four runs on two hits in the opening inning. In the ensuing inning the Lions added two runs as they took advantage of a fielding error. The Lions scored five runs on four hits in the fourth, and then brought in five more runs across the fifth and sixth innings.
The Colonels scored in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Miller hit a one out triple before scoring on a
Noah Detillier sacrifice fly while in the sixth, Collura laced his second home run of the day to score the Colonels' second run. The Red & Gray added two runs on three hits in the seventh. After
Fisher Ingersoll hit a leadoff double
Chase Jans replaced him on the base pads and scored on Miller's second triple of the day. Booker Jr. plated Miller for the Colonels' final run.
