THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team opened the 2025 season with a pair of victories on the road at Mississippi Valley State University (Aug. 29) and Alcorn State University (Aug. 30).
GAME ONE: Nicholls 3, MVSU 1| 25-15, 25-11, 18-25, 25-18
The Colonels began the weekend with a convincing win over the Devillettes. The Red & Gray offense was clicking early as the unit hit .371 and .32 percent in the first two sets. However, the Devilletes responded by tallying 16 kills while hitting .293 to snatch set 3 before the Colonels took care of business in the fourth stanza to earn the opening day victory.
The Red & Gray attack was paced effortlessly by setter
Isabella Padilla who dished out 26 assists while adding a team high 14 digs and four kills. She often connected with the trio of
Madison Smith,
Tamara Chavez, and
Harper Holden.
Smith led the attack with 11 kills while adding 13 digs for her first double-double of the year. While Chavez (.368) and Holden (.643) were efficient with their opportunities to add nine kills apiece. Ana Clara Vale do Valentim chipped in with five kills while
Tierney Terrell and
Maelie Chupin finished with three apiece.
Defensively,
Ava-Claire Calais added seven digs while both
Melanie Guevara and Chavez claimed six. The Colonels posted 10 total blocks with Harper leading the way with three followed by Smith and Valentim do Vale who each had two. Chavez, Padilla, and Terrell claimed the other three stuffs.
GAME TWO: Nicholls 3, Alcorn 0 | 25-14, 25-18, 25-19
The Colonels kept their momentum rolling into their match against the Lady Braves as they tallied 12 more kills than the opponent to complete their first sweep of the season.
The Red & Gray offense that registered 35 kills was paced by Padilla who dished 27 assists.
Madison Smith spearheaded the attack with 10 kills while Chavez and Terrell added seven and six kills, respectively.
The Colonels' defense was stout throughout the contest as they forced the Lady Braves to hit -.011 percentage for the match.
Karina Smith anchored the defense with 12 digs while
Madison Smith claimed 10 to register her second consecutive double-double. In the middle, Harper led the unit with six blocks followed by Terrell and Padilla who had two apiece.
