NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The Nicholls State University women's basketball team defeated New Orleans 79-64 inside Lakefront Arena on Saturday afternoon.
After a back and forth three quarters, Nicholls (8-6, 4-3 SLC) took control of the action in the fourth to secure the fourth consecutive victory over UNO. The victory gives the Red & Gray a 22-21 advantage in the all-time series dating back to the 1994-95 season.
The Colonels' defense was outstanding throughout the game but especially in the fourth quarter as they held the Privateers to zero field goals the final 8:16 of the game. UNO hit a triple to make the score 59-58, before the Colonels went on a 20-5 run to put the game on ice.
The Red & Gray was able to turn defense into offense as they finished the game with 31 points off 26 turnovers and had four double figure scorers.
Anyra Wilson led the offense as she hit four field goals including one triple and six free throws for 15 points while stuffing the stat sheet with nine rebounds, eight assists, and six steals.
Marie Kenembeni hit five shots and finished with 14 points, while
Tanita Swift and
Sh'Diamond McKnight added 13 points apiece.
Sanaiya Morris added nine points and
Emani Burks had six points and hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds.
