Colonels Clipped by Cardinals in Back-and-Forth Affair

THIBOUDAUX, La – Senior guard Tanita Swift scored 20 points in the Nicholls State University women's basketball team's 72-64 loss against Lamar University inside Stopher Gym on Saturday afternoon.
 
The contest was a battle throughout as both teams hit over 20 field goals and 20 free throws. Swift hit seven field goals and six shots from the charity stripe to lead all scorers. Additionally, there was six lead changes, and a team did not hold a double figure lead until late in the fourth quarter.
 
Both teams had similar stats after the first 20 minutes of action. The Colonels made 10 field goals and nine free throws while the Cardinals hit nine shots and converted 12 foul shots. After the strong start offensively by both squads, the Colonels trailed 32-30 at the intermission.
 
The second half had the same back and forth theme until the Cardinals pieced together a few buckets in a row to generate the largest lead of the game (11) with 1:15 to go. Despite losing the rebound battle by 13 the Red & Gray were able to generate good looks around the rim and win the points in the paint by 10 (36-26). The Colonels forced 20 turnovers for the 10th time this season while committing 13, however both teams scored 17 points off the takeaways.
 
Sh'Diamond McKnight joined Swift in double figures as she hit five field goals including one from long range and three foul shots to finish with 14 points. Jasmine Matthews finished with nine points.
 
Lamar had three double digit scorers as Kamryn Wilson had 19 points followed by R'Mani Taylor (17), and Taliah Hill (12). This was the Colonels sixth consecutive loss to the Cardinals, and they now trail the all-time series 28-16 dating back to 1999.
