THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University men's and women's tennis teams turned in a dominant day at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex on Tuesday as both squads defeated Mississippi Gulf Coast, 6-1 and 7-0, respectively.
Both teams improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Colonel women's team controlled doubles play from the start, sweeping all three courts by identical 6-1 scores.
Aada Inna and
Paulina Villegas won at No. 1,
Blanca Losada and
Noemie Piquet were victorious at No. 2, and
Julia Bordiginon and
Jada Iverson secured the sweep at No. 3.
In singles, Nicholls won every match in straight sets.
Bordiginon was flawless at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-0 win, while Losada (6-1, 6-0) and
Angela Basto (6-0, 6-2) also delivered commanding performances. Inna claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1, Piquet added a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 2, and Iverson closed out the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5.
For the men's match, the Colonels responded by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Felipe Spagnuolo and
Mateo De Los Santos cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 2, while
Mitchell Armbruster and
Arthur Oliani sealed the point with a 6-2 victory at No. 3.
In singles, the men won five of six matches.
Marcell Marki battled back at No. 2 singles after dropping the first set, earning a 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 win in a match tiebreak. Oliani delivered a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 3, and Armbruster added a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4.
For the final two matches,
Mitchell Spence secured a straight-set win at No. 5 (6-4, 7-5), and De Los Santos was dominant at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep.
Mississippi Gulf Coast's lone point came at No. 1 singles in a tightly contested three-set match.
