Late Surge Not Enough for Colonels on Thursday Night

BEAUMONT, Texas -- Tanita Swift and Marie Kenembeni scored 14 points apiece in the Nicholls State University women's basketball team's 62-52 loss on the road against Lamar on Thursday night.

Nicholls (12-13, 8-10 SLC) trailed by 19 with 7:13 left in the fourth quarter before the offense clicked as they pieced together a scoring run that brought the Colonels within six with 30 seconds to go. However, the Cardinals hit clutch free throws down the stretch to keep the Colonels at bay.

Swift played all 40 minutes and hit four field goals including one triple and converted five free throws to finish with 14 points. She also added 11 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season. Kenembeni was a force on both ends as she hit five shots and four free throws while registering three blocks and three steals defensively.

For the 18th time this season, the Colonels won the turnover battle as they generated 16 points off 19 takeaways. The Colonels also pushed the pace as they outscored the Cardinals on the break 17-3. Neither team shot well from the field as the difference in the defensive battle was on the glass as the Cardinals outrebounded the Colonels 57-34. Despite the difference on the boards the Colonels recorded two more second chance points than Lamar (11-9).
