With a postseason berth already secured, Nicholls (12-17, 11-9 SLC) kept its hopes for a first-round bye alive with Monday's 53-52 win at Lamar. English scored the game-winning layup with one second left, snapping a six-game skid in the series against the Cardinals.
Nicholls enters the final weekend of play in a tie for fifth with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and both trail New Orleans and UTRGV by one game in the standings. The top four teams receive byes in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament, with the top two receiving a double bye. The Colonels split the season series with all three teams.
Including his 18 points in the win at Lamar on Monday, English has been on a tear in the last six games after returning from injury. He is averaging 16.3 points, 4.2 assists and over 2.0 steals per contest during the stretch. In the same span, Hamoda has upped his scoring at 14.5 points thanks to shooting a blistering 47 percent from three-point range.
The Colonels are 5-5 at home this season, looking to end a five-game skid at Stopher Gymnasium. Nicholls last played in Thibodaux on Feb. 9 before its four-game Texas road swing where they went 2-2.Â
Southeastern (8-21, 5-15 SLC) comes to town aiming to pick up a season sweep after handing the Colonels a 67-61 loss in January. The Lions have been eliminated from postseason play but can shake up the standing as the wrap up the season with New Orleans.
