Nicholls Looks to Carry Momentum Into Home Matchups with AMCC, UTRGV

THIBODAUX, La. - Coming off back-to-back wins on the road, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team will go for two more series sweeps as the Colonels host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Feb. 6) and UTRGV (Feb. 8).

Tipoff for Saturday's matchup against the Islanders is scheduled for 3 p.m. following the women's game. Monday's contest will tipoff at 6:30 p.m.

Nicholls (10-13, 9-5 SLC) has had a roller-coaster start to its conference season and hopes to continue the upwards trend. The Colonels got off to their second-best start ever by winning the first seven games, but then lost five consecutive games before last weekend. Behind a strong defensive effort, the Colonels bounced back on the road and picked up season sweeps of East Texas A&M and Northwestern State.

The Red and Gray held the opposition to 37 percent shooting as the Lions and Demons scored just an average of 63.0 points in the losses. On offense, Nicholls shot 43 percent and was led by Zee Hamoda and Jalik Dunkley who both averaged 17.0 points. Sincere Malone also scored in double figures at 13.0 ppg while tacking on four more steals to up his league-leading total to 45.

The Islanders (12-11, 8-6 SLC) will not only be looking to avenge the earlier loss to the Colonels, but a win would tie them with Nicholls for third place in the standings. AMCC slipped a game back after a heartbreaking 71-69 loss to UIW on Monday. Sheldon Williams had a double-double in the loss and leads the Islanders in scoring on the season at 11.5 ppg.

UTRGV (12-11, 8-6 SLC) has been one of the hottest teams in the SLC, reeling off wins in its last six games. The streak started with a win over McNeese and the Vaqueros went on to piece together three straight victories on the road. UTRGV will take on New Orleans on Saturday before heading to Thibodaux.

The Colonels' mini home stand will be their last games in Louisiana until they return home on Saturday, Feb. 28 against Southeastern.
