Colonels Drop Tuesday Night Tilt to No. 20 LSU

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team looked to be in another tight battle against No. 20 LSU, but the Tigers offense cranked out 10 runs in the final four innings to hand the Colonels a 12-2 loss Tuesday night at Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park.

Nicholls (12-11) trailed 2-1 through three innings thanks to an RBI single by Gabby Higbee in the second frame. But LSU exploded for four runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and added four more in the seventh. Higbee drove in the Colonels' final run on a double in the seventh.

The Colonels had just three hits with Reagan Heflin adding a double to set up Higbee's first RBI. LSU pounded out 14 hits with Alix Franklin and Kylee Edwards each tallying three.

Leading 2-1 in the fourth, the Tigers received three of their four runs in the inning on one swing as Avery Hodge hit a three-run home run. Nicholls was retired in order in the bottom half by Cali Deal, who picked up the win with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings.

LSU plated two more runs in the fifth before extending their lead to double digits in the seventh. Kayleigh Lugowski walked with two outs and scored on Higbee's double to make the final.

Molly Yoo tossed 3.1 innings with five runs on five hits. Ashley Little and Sierra Ouellette combined for five strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.
