THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's tennis team dropped its Southland Conference matches to open the season, falling to Stephen F. Austin, 5-2, on Friday before dropping a 6-1 decision to Northwestern State on Sunday.
Against Stephen F. Austin (2-6, 1-0 SLC), the Colonels earned two singles victories but fell in the other four matches in straight sets.
The pairing of
Aada Inna and
Paulina Villegas delivered a strong performance on the top doubles court, defeating Felicia Back and Sonja Rooth, 6-3. However, SFA secured wins on courts two and three to claim the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles action,
Blanca Losada rallied after dropping the opening set to defeat Ana Paula Chavez in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4.
Amalie Grube Andersen added another point for Nicholls with a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles, topping Alk Giannakogiorgou, 6-4, 6-1.
The Ladyjacks secured the remaining singles matches to clinch the 5-2 team victory.
Nicholls returned to the courts to face Northwestern State (8-4, 4-0 SLC) on Sunday, where the Lady Demons took the doubles point and five of six singles matches for a 6-1 result.
Northwestern State grabbed the early lead with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to go ahead 1-0. Villegas and Inna nearly had a perfect weekend at No. 1 but were outlasted in a tiebreaker, falling 7-6 (2).
The Colonels' lone point came at the No. 1 line as Villegas delivered a strong showing, defeating Honoka Umeda in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
