THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University men's tennis team battled through its opening stretch of Southland Conference play but came up short in a pair of matches against UIW and Lamar at the Thibodaux Regionals Sports Complex.
Nicholls (4-8, 0-2 SLC) dropped a 6-1 decision to UIW on Saturday before falling by the same score on Monday against Lamar.
Against UIW, the Colonels were unable to secure the doubles point as the Cardinals swept all three courts to take an early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Nicholls found its lone point on Line 5 as
Mitchell Armbruster outlasted Santiago Flyckt in a three-set thriller, rallying for a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-7 victory.
Although UIW won the remaining five courts,
Felipe Spagnuolo and
Mateo De Los Santos pushed their matches to a third-set tiebreaker.
Against Lamar, Nicholls dropped the doubles point with close losses at 1 and 3, but Spagnuolo and De Los Santos claimed a 6-4 win at No. 2.
Lamar cruised to clinch with straight-set wins at No. 2, 1 and 6. The final three courts went in a third set or super tiebreaker, capped with a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-8 win by
Arthur Oliani.
