BEAUMONT, Texas - The Nicholls State University softball team took an early lead but two big innings by Lamar would be too much to overcome as the Colonels fell 7-2 in the series final on Saturday afternoon at the LU Softball Complex.
The loss was the fourth straight for Nicholls (19-16, 7-5 SLC) and the first sweep of the season. Lamar improved to 21-15 and 8-4 in the SLC as they extended its winning streak to 10 games.
Nicholls totaled seven hits including four for extra bases but could only plate two runs.
Erin Krause drove in the game's first run when she doubled in
Claire Sisco in the opening frame.
Making her third start of the week,
Molly Yoo kept LU scoreless through two innings but left the game in the third. She allowed a leadoff triple and Isabella Flores followed with an RBI single. After walking the next batter,
Averi Paden took over in the circle for Yoo. Then facing a full count, Cala Wilson hit a three-run homer for a 4-1 advantage.
Nicholls got one back in the fourth when
Gabby Higbee doubled to make the score 4-2.
Brynne Songy singled and was able to score from first on the play. But it would be the final run for the Colonels.
In the fifth, LU added three runs on four hits and two Colonel errors. Reagan Smith then retired Nicholls in order in the sixth and seventh innings to complete the sweep.
