THIBODAUX, La. - Looking to cap the regular season on a high note, the Nicholls State University women's tennis team rallied back after dropping the doubles point to pick up a 4-3 victory over Southern Miss on Sunday at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
Trailing 1-0 after doubles, singles turned out to be a battle as five of the six matches were decided in three sets. The lone exception was a 6-3, 6-2 win by
Paulina Villegas at No. 1 which tied the match for the Colonels.
Playing her final match, senior
Noemie Piquet gave Nicholls the lead with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory at No. 3.
Aada Inna then made it 3-1 after she bounced back from a shutout loss in the opening set for a 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) win.
But Southern Miss came away with wins by Pimmada Lim and Kamornwan Kornsila at No. 6 and 5, setting up a winner-take-all at No. 4.
Blanca Losada was edged in the opening set, 7-5, but fought back to force a third with a 7-6 (2) triumph. In the final set, Losada secured the team victory with a 6-4 win over Miranda Xu.
Before singles, Southern Miss won courts 2 and 3 by score of 6-2 for the early lead.
The win was the Colonels' second in their final three matches. It also marked the first victory over Southern Miss since 2018, snapping a four-match losing skid.
