THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State University women's basketball head coach Justin Payne has stepped down after three years at the helm of the Colonels, Nicholls Vice President for Athletics and Athletics Director Jonathan Terrell announced Tuesday afternoon.
 
Assistant Jalyn Johnson-Joubert has been named interim head coach.
 
"Losing great people is never easy, but when they leave something better than they found it, you can't help but wish them the very best," Terrell said. "Justin Payne is a true Colonel who understood what it takes to succeed here. We're grateful for his dedication, passion, and the impact he made on this team, university, and community. He will be missed, but we are incredibly proud of him and thankful to his entire family for everything they gave to Colonel Nation."
 
Payne concludes his three-year tenure at Nicholls with a 46-48 record including winning one game each season in Southland Conference Tournament. Payne's squad won at least 14 games in all three seasons including posting a 17-14 mark in 2024-25 to record the Red & Gray's first winning season since the 2018-19 season.
 
Along with the Nicholls' team success, Payne coached All SLC Second Team selection Lexi Alexander (2024), SLC Freshman of the Year Britiya Curtis (2024), and All SLC Defensive selection Tanita Swift (2026).
