THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's tennis team celebrated Senior Day with its first league win of the season as the Colonels defeated New Orleans, 6-1, on Thursday at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
Before the match, the program recognized its two seniors --
Amalie Grube Andersen and
Noemie Piquet -- and both posted three-set victories in singles.
Nicholls started doubles play by grinding out wins on courts 1 and 3 to claim the point.
Paulina Villegas and
Aada Inna won 6-4 before
Jada Iverson and
Julia Bordiginon won in a tiebreaker at No. 3, 7-6 (4). But Piquet and
Blanca Losada fell short of the sweep as the duo fell in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3).
In singles action, Villegas started things off with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 and Losada followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 4. Bordiginon rounded out the straight-set victors for the Colonels with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 5 to clinch the match.
UNO's Kate Kalistratova prevented the shutout with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win at No. 2. Then the Colonel seniors delivered in three sets to wrap up the match. Piquet won her battle at No. 3, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3, while Andersen came out on top with a 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-0 win at No. 6.Â
