THIBODAUX, La. - Playing at home for the first time this season, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team scored four goals against Alcorn but could not slow down the Braves' offensive attack as five second-half goals lifted the visitors to a 7-4 victory Thursday night at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
Coming off an 11-goal game, Nicholls (1-1-1) broke a 2-2 halftime lead early in the second when
Sammi Doyle struck with her second goal of the night. However, the duo of Grace Ambrose and Annick Zouma each scored twice after the break as both recorded a hat trick in the win.
For the match, it only took six-plus minutes for the Colonels to grab the lead. Following a foul,
Alyssa Wheeler launched a free kick towards the net and Doyle was able to get her foot on a high bounce for the first goal of the night. But in the 11th minute, Zouma converted on a penalty for a 1-1 tie.
Ambrose broke free for a 2-1 Braves advantage before
Jessica Avonyo scored her first goal as a Colonel in the 43rd minute.
Kaylie Harris found her open down the right side and Avonyo sent the teams into a 2-2 tie at the break.
Doyle's second goal was assisted by Wheeler and
Jezlyn Nelson in the 49th minute. But the lead did not last long as Ambrose scored twice over a six-minute span for a 4-3 Alcorn advantage.
After racking up two assists, Wheeler drilled a shot into the back of the net to even it back up in the 64th minute. The four points was a career high for the Clovis, California native.
But in the final 20 minutes, Alcorn (1-2) pulled away. Zouma scored two of the final three goals as the Braves won in Thibodaux for the second straight time.
Aislinn Wright totaled six saves after facing 18 shots. The Colonels totaled 12 shots with six in each half.Â
