THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University soccer team will begin Southland Conference play in a road contest against Houston Christian University on Wednesday, Sept. 17. Kickoff from Sorrels Field in Houston, Texas is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Last week, Nicholls (2-3-3) suffered a 2-1 loss to Southern Miss. The Colonels enter league play with one of the best offenses in the SLC as they are one of three teams that average at least three goals per contest (3.714).
The Red & Gray's balanced offense features seven different players with multiple goals.
Alyssa Wheeler leads the unit with 13 points as she has five goals and three assists.
Olyvia Pugh has 12 points as she has four goals and a team-high four assists.
Jezlyn Nelson and
Sammi Doyle also have four goals.
Kaylie Harris has three goals while both
Sydney Becker and
Angelina Rispone have scored twice.
HCU (4-3-2) enters league play on a two-game winning streak after being Southern and Prairie View A&M, by the same score, 3-1. The Huskies have nine players with at least one goal and four with multiple goals.
Isabella Dillow leads the way with four goals and two assists. Paisley Barela has three goals and three assists while Olivia Rossman and Madison Stormberg have two goals apiece. Goalkeeper Emmy McKeon has 35 saves across nine starts this season.
Nicholls and HCU have clashed 16 times dating back to 2009. The Colonels won the second matchup in 2013 but have dropped 14. Last year's 1-1 tie was the only draw in the series.
