Chuck Hepola

Chuck Hepola is in his fifth year with the Colonel program, and third as the associate head coach. Along with overseeing the running backs, Hepola will serve as the special teams coordinator this season.

Under Hepola’s guidance, the Colonels have had two running backs earn All-Southland. Last season, the senior tandem of Marcus Washington, who earned all-conference in 2011, and Dalton Hilliard Jr. accounted for over 1,100 all-purpose yards and 15 touchdowns, despite neither player appearing in the final three games due to injuries.

Hepola came to Nicholls after a one-year stint at Louisiana-Monroe. Prior to ULM, Hepola spent the previous four years at East Central University as the offensive coordinator/quarterback’s coach.  For ECU, Hepola coached six all-conference players, including two-time first-team selection quarterback Marcus Johnson.
Under Hepola’s guidance, Johnson became the school’s all-time leading passer as a junior and shattered ECU’s single-season passing record with over 3,100 yards in 2008.  In 2007, Hepola guided ECU’s offense, setting 13 school records on the offensive side of the ball.

Before his four-year stint with ECU, Hepola spent two seasons as an assistant, specializing in quarterbacks under current Nicholls head coach Charlie Stubbs at the University of Tulsa.  Hepola was an integral part of the 2003 staff that guided Tulsa to an 8-4 record, a second place finish in the Western Athletic Conference and a trip to the Humanitarian Bowl.

Hepola also spent time in the high school ranks, coaching at a host of schools prior to signing on with Tulsa. He served as head coach at Logan-Rogersville and was defensive coordinator at Hillcrest and Willard.

A native of Tulsa, Okla., Hepola holds an undergraduate degree from Evangel University and a master’s in education from Drury University.

Hepola is married to the former Kirstin Mumm, and the couple resides in Thibodaux with their daughter, Courtney (17) and son, Chance (15).
