Sammy Joseph

Sammy Joseph is in his second season with the Nicholls State University football program. Joseph joined the Colonels after coaching at St. Michael’s Academy in Austin, Texas. He served as the wide receivers and defensive backs coach, and also directed the strength and conditioning program.

In his first season at Nicholls, the running backs led Nicholls to a No. 12 national ranking in rushing yards, averaging 246.8 yards per game. The backs accounted for eight 100-yard games, led by All-Southland Second Team honoree Dontrell Taylor who tied the school single-season record with five en route to rushing for 990 yards. Averaging 7.2 yards per carry, Taylor also etched his name in the Colonel record book for best single-season average. 

A native of New Orleans and a graduate of LSU, Joseph played professionally for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers before spending three seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts.

At LSU, Joseph was a key member of the special teams unit, playing in a total of 17 games in the 2005 and ’06 seasons. He later earned his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.

Joseph also has a background in strength and conditioning. He directed the strength and conditioning for the Woodlands Swim Club and Redline Athletics, and was an assistant coach for Derrick Joseph Fitness in New Orleans. He also served as a strength and conditioning intern at LSU from 2014-15.

Playing Experience: Played defensive back at the University of Colorado (2003-04) and LSU (2005-06)… played professionally for the San Francisco 49ers (2007) and the Toronto Argonauts (2009-11).

Education: Received a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Louisiana State University in 2014.
