Kathryn Stock had 31 digs on Saturday against Stephen F. Austin
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – After going up two sets to none, the Nicholls State University women's volleyball team looked poised to earn a victory over Stephen F. Austin, but the Ladyjacks came back to win the final three sets to defeat the Colonels 25-21, 25-22, 15-25, 21-25, 15-17 Saturday afternoon in Thibodaux.
With the loss the Colonels fall to 10-16 on the year and 5-10 in Southland Conference play.
Saturday's match was set by both defenses, as there were a combined 232 digs on the day as SFA had 119 and Nicholls had 113 and 21 total combined team blocks.
Kathryn Stock finished a dig shy of tying a Nicholls match record, as she finished with a career-high 31 to go along with her 12 kills for her second double-double of the season.
Offensively,
Sarah Terry led the Colonels with a .222 hitting average and career record 18 kills, pacing four Nicholls players who finished with double-digit kills on the afternoon.
Jennifer Brandt earned her tenth double-double of the season as she had 16 kills and 22 digs, while
Nancy Taylor set a new career record for assists tallying 55 to go along with her career-high 20 digs for her eighth.
Of the 26 ties and 13 lead changes in the entire match, ten and five came in the first set alone. Down 18-17, Nicholls rattled off four straight to take a 21-18 lead before going on to win the set 25-21. Again trailing in the second, this time down 22-18, the Colonels rattled off the final seven points of the set in a row to charge back and take the second 25-22.
After the intermission, SFA began to go on a bit of a charge and after an 8-8 tie went on a 8-0 run to jump out to a 16-8 lead. The Ladyjacks used another run, this time with the score 18-13 to rattle off four straight to go up 22-18 and cruise to the 25-18 third set win.
In the fourth, Nicholls led at one point 13-9 and 16-11 before Stephen F. Austin outscored the Colonels 8-3 to tie the match at 19. The Ladyjacks were in the midst of a five-point run when they took the lead for good going up 22-19, keeping Nicholls at bay sending the match to a fifth set after a 25-21 set win.
The final frame would be the hardest to take as the Colonels took control early winning the first five points. Nicholls went into the side switch still leading eventually going up 13-8. That's where the Colonel offense began to stall and allowed the Ladyjacks to get back into the match with a 7-1 run to tie the set at 14-all. With the match going to extra points, the Colonels only got the first point after the tie before SFA got the last three points of the set consecutively to end the match.
