Jennifer Brandt had a game-high 11 kills in the win over Grambling State Thursday night
Final Stats GRAMBLING, La. – The Nicholls State University women's team made the six-hour trek to north Louisiana to take on the Grambling State Tigers and came away with a dominating 25-12, 25-15, 25-22 straight-set win Thursday night.
With the win the Colonels improve to 7-10 on the year, winning their second consecutive road match in the team's last non-conference tilt of the year.
Once again Nicholls was strong offensively led by
Jennifer Brandt's game-high 11 kills, while
Jessica Addicks hit a scorching .600 clip with ten kills. As a team the Colonels hit .206 on the night, as
Nancy Taylor had 14 assists followed by
Marlee Bean who had 11.
The Nicholls defense held the Tigers (0-11) to just -.011 hitting, as Grambling had 18 kills as a team with 19 errors. The Colonels were still able to dig up 51 shots as a group, paced by
Jeanne Logarbo who finished with a game-high 12. The Colonels also had seven aces as well, with three coming from
Amanda Newlin and
Carley McInnis.
With the score knotted at one in the first set, Nicholls outscored the Tigers 10-4 to take an 11-5 lead early. That six-point lead shrunk when Grambling scored six of the next seven to pull within one of the Colonels at 12-11. After taking two back to go up 14-11 Grambling got another point back to get to 12, failing to score again as the Colonels served out the set getting the final 11 points to win 25-12.
The Tigers kept pace with Nicholls for the first 14 points of the set, tying with the Colonels three times during that period. With the score tied 7-7, Nicholls rattled off three straight to take a 10-7 lead before Grambling broke the rally to make the score 10-8. After that Tiger score, the Colonels went on an 8-0 run to take a ten-point lead at 18-8. The distance was enough to hold off the Tigers as Nicholls got two runs of three points to close out the second 25-15.
There were a total of nine ties and four lead changes in the third and final set, as Grambling made the Colonels work for the victory going deep into the final points before closing out the match. With a 10-all tie, Nicholls scored the next four points to go up 14-10, splitting the next eight points to go up 18-14. Grambling went on to outscore Nicholls 6-2 to tie the set at 20. After trading the next two points, the Colonels got a three-point push to go up 24-21, eventually closing out the match 25-22.
The Colonels return home, and into Southland Conference play, on Saturday afternoon hosting the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions at 2 p.m. in Stopher Gym.
