HAMMOND, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team dropped its doubleheader on Saturday at the Lion Classic, falling to Tennessee-Martin, 5-3, before being held scoreless in the second game, 3-0, against Troy.
Nicholls (0-3) will wrap up tournament play on Sunday with two games, at 11 a.m. versus Akron and a 1 p.m. matchup against Jackson State.
The freshmen duo of
Rachel Moore and
Paige Miller paced the Colonel offense. Miller drove in two runs against UT-Martin while Moore finished with two hits and two RBIs, including her second home run of the season.
Senior
Ashley Ray extended her hitting streak to a program-record 16-games with a single in the first game, but was 0-for-2 against Troy.
Against UT-Martin, the Skyhawks pitched around Ray to load the bases with two outs in the third and the next batter, Miller, delivered a single to left to put Nicholls up 2-0.
UTM answered with two runs in the fourth to even the score, and added two more in the fifth to take the lead.
Trailing 5-2 in the seventh, Moore connected on her second home run in as many games, but it wouldn't be enough as Nicholls fell 5-3.
Junior
Ashton Bennett was charged with the loss, giving up four earned in 4.1 innings of work. She scattered five hits and struck out four.
In the second game, Nicholls could never get its offense going as Troy held the Colonels to only three hits. The Trojans plated two runs in the first and added an insurance run in the third as they remained undefeated on the season.
Freshman
Rachael Hugghins (0-1) saw her first action of the season, tossing 3.1 innings, giving up three earned on five hits. Sophomore
Katie Moulder threw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two.
Moore,
Kat Angeles and
Alaina Guidry accounted for the three hits.
