HATTIESBURG, Miss.  –
The Nicholls State University softball team could only muster up two runs on Sunday at The Golden Pub and Grill Classic as the Colonels fell 5-0 to IUPUI before dropping the finale, 6-2, against Mississippi Valley State.

Nicholls (3-11) will continue its nine-game road stretch on Tuesday with a matchup in Jackson, Miss. against Jackson State. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Against IUPUI (4-7), Nicholls was held to just three hits in the game as the Colonels were shutout for the second time this season. Leah Andrus and Ashley Ray both had doubles in the game, with Alaina Guidry accounting for the other hit.

Katie Moulder (2-4) was credited the loss, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out five.

In the finale against Mississippi Valley State, Andrus gave the Colonels a 2-0 lead in the third after a two-run double, but the Devilettes answered with three runs in their next at-bat. MVSU then tacked on three more in the fifth en route to the 6-2 victory.

Nicholls finished with 11 hits in the loss, but stranded 12 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the first and fourth innings. Ray and Megan Gaspard led the Colonels with two hits each, while starting pitcher Ashton Bennett also chipped in with two hits.

Despite giving up no earned runs, Bennett was tagged with the loss, throwing four innings with five hits and a strikeout. Moulder made her second appearance of the day, giving up three runs on seven hits in two innings.

After Andrus' two-run double in the Colonel third put Nicholls on the board for the first time, MVSU manufactured three runs on three hits in the bottom half to take the lead.

In the fourth, back-to-back singles from Bennett and Guidry to start the inning led to runners in scoring position with two outs. With first base open, the Devilettes pitched around Ray before forcing a pop up in the infield by Angeles to maintain the 3-2 lead.

In the next frame, the Devilettes had four hits, including a two-run homer to left center, to extend their advantage to 6-2. The Colonels would get three hits over the final two innings, but were unable to push any of the runners across the plate as the dropped their third straight game.
