Colonel Men’s Tennis Falls at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Nicholls State University men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision at Southern Miss on Sunday, ending its two-match winning streak.

Nicholls falls to 3-2 on the season, while Southern Miss ups its record to 3-1. The Golden Eagles' lone defeat came against No. 24 LSU.

In doubles, Roy Knight and James Russell dropped an 8-4 decision to Matt Frost/Andrew Goodwin, and USM claimed the point after Evan Karatzas and Damian Despotovski were defeated 8-2 by Paulo Alvarado / Juan Escobar.

The Golden Eagles quickly clinched the match by taking the No. 4, No. 3 and No. 1 pairings in straight sets.  At the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, Knight and Russell even their matches with 6-4 wins in the second set, but both were defeated 10-6 in the third.

The men return to action on Feb. 2 with an away/home doubleheader, taking on UNO in New Orleans at 9 a.m. before hosting Xavier (La.) at 4 p.m.
