Islanders Upend Colonels Volleyball In Three

Final Stats CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team on the road succumbed to the powerful offense of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in a straight-sets loss Thursday night, 25-16, 25-19, 25-8, at the Dugan Wellness Center in Corpus Christi.

Nicholls (5-19, 2-12 SLC) was led by Kayla Burling's 10 kills and was followed by Kayla Mashburn's nine and .206 hitting percentage. As a team the Colonels hit just .120 in the match, earning just 25 kills as a group with just 24 assists as 14 came from Alyse Barclay and 10 from Ainsley Marroccoli.

Defensively, Nicholls got a game-high 14 digs from Kalynn Egea, while Mikayla Miller had four blocks, two solo and two assisted, as the Colonels finished with five total team blocks to the Islanders' (16-10, 10-4) four.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was strong offensively on the night as the team hit a blistering .353 as a group with four players earning double-digit kills led by Ivy Baresh's 12. Baresh earned a double-double tying for the Islander lead in digs with 13 along with libero Shayla Maldonado, as A&M-Corpus Christi also had three players finish with double-digit digs for the home side.

Nicholls fell behind 8-3 before calling a timeout in the opening set, as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was just beginning its offensive attack and outscored the Colonels 8-5 out of the break to take a 16-8 lead before the team called another timeout to halt a 5-0 Islander run. Nicholls couldn't catch A&M-Corpus Christi after as the Islanders won the first set 25-16.

It was much of the same in the second set as Nicholls fell behind by another large margin, this time trailing 9-3 in the opening points of the second. However, the Colonels mounted a big comeback to pull within three of the Islanders with a 7-4 run to make it 13-10. A&M-Corpus Christi weathered the rally and scored five of the next seven to force a Nicholls timeout down 18-12. The Islanders didn't get to set point easily, as Nicholls got to the 19 point mark with A&M-Corpus Christi just at the 23-point mark, but the Islanders closed out the match getting the final two points they needed to go into the intermission up 2-0, 25-19.

Trailing 14-6 after being down just three eight points earlier, Nicholls called a timeout to hopefully stop the Islanders from gaining some momentum. The Colonels got the first two points out of the timeout to make it 14-8, but would not score another point for the rest of the match as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had their best hitting set while Nicholls had its worst as the Islanders got the next 11 in order to close out the set and finish the match.

The Colonels will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Houston Baptist Huskies in Sharp Gym in Houston.
