THIBODAUX, La.  – The Nicholls State University softball team's offensive woes continued in its home opener against South Alabama as the Colonels were held to two runs or fewer for sixth time this season, dropping a 7-1 decision to the Jaguars Wednesday night at the Colonel Softball Complex.

Nicholls (4-6) managed only four hits in the loss and had 10 strikeouts. Ashley Bertot had two singles and drove in the Colonels' lone run, plating Courtney Vanlandingham who led off the fourth with a base hit. Brittany Marcet also had a hit for Nicholls, which dropped its fourth straight game.

Freshman Hannah Haydel took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year. Haydel threw 4.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits. South Alabama got to Haydel in the first, scoring a run after an error by Vanlandingham.

Haydel kept South Alabama (9-1) off the board in the next three innings, but the Jaguars chased her out of the fifth with three runs on three hits. Trailing by four in the bottom half of the frame, Bertot's single up the middle cut the lead to 4-1.

South Alabama would add three insurance runs off Katie Moulder, making the final 7-1. Moulder tossed 2.1 innings, surrendering one earned run on four hits.

Jaguar starter Hannah Campbell pitched all seven innings for the win. Haley Fagan and Alex Breeden led USA with two hits and two RBIs.

Nicholls will be back in action this weekend, playing four games in the Blues City Classic in Southhaven, Miss. The Colonels open up the classic on Feb. 23 against Indiana State.
