Nicholls takes on Towson in a three-game series beginning on Friday at 1 p.m.
THIBODAUX, La. – Riding a three-game winning streak, the Nicholls State University baseball team continues its home stand this weekend hosting the 3-0 Towson Tigers for a weekend series beginning Friday at 1 p.m. in Thibodaux.
The games on Friday and Saturday will begin at 1 p.m., while the finale will take place on Sunday at noon. Towson is expected to go with senior pitcher Mike Volpe, sophomore Paul Beers and junior Brandon Gonnella, while the Colonels counter with
Mike Suk,
Taylor Byrd and
Kory Delange on the mound for Nicholls.
Nicholls continued its early winning ways on Wednesday night, taking an 11-1 victory over the Southern Jaguars to open the team's home schedule. When combined with the series finale against Houston Baptist, the Colonels have scored 26 runs on 31 hits during the two games, the first time the team has had back-to-back double-digit run games since the 2011 season.
The Colonels currently have five players hitting .500 or better through the four games, with
Ray Eureste batting 500,
Philip Lyons and
Matt Richard hitting .412,
Leo Vargas hitting .333 and
Tyler Duplantis hitting .308. Eureste, Lyons and Richard each have seven hits on the season, with Eureste's two triples and a double, Lyons' four doubles, and Richard's two triples and home run. As a team the Colonels have 13 extra base hits, with 66 total bases to the opposition's 37.
Nicholls has gotten stronger on the mound as the season has progressed, giving up eight runs in its last three games after allowing nine in the opener.
Zach Thiac got the win on Wednesday, and has nine strikeouts to just one walk, having yet to give up an earned run this season. As a staff against the Jaguars, the Colonel arms struck out 13 batters, allowing just one unearned run on the night.
Towson enters the weekend with a perfect 3-0 mark, after playing Southland Conference foe McNeese State last weekend earning the sweep of the Cowboys. The Tigers scored eight or more runs in all three games, including pulling out a 10-9 victory over the Cowboys in 15 innings last Saturday. Towson's Dominic Fratantuono was named the Colonial Athletic Association player of the week after going .429 at the plate with six hits and nine RBI. 12 Towson pitchers saw action in the series, finishing with a team ERA of 1.91.
