Colonels Pick up 10-8 Win Over Alcorn State

THIBODAUX, La.  – The Nicholls State University softball team gave up a five-run lead against Alcorn State as the Lady Braves rallied for a two-run advantage after five and a half innings, but Nicholls put up a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth to hold on for a 10-8 win Tuesday at the Colonel Softball Complex.

Nicholls (9-13) snaps a two-game skid with the victory, while Alcorn falls to 1-13. The Colonels return to the diamond tomorrow as they head to Baton Rouge to face No. 13 LSU. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start and will air on CST.

The Colonels collected 13 hits against the Lady Braves, led by freshman Danielle Phillips with three hits and three RBIs. Leah Andrus had two hits and two RBIs while Brittany Marcet, Ashton Bennett and Paige Miller each had two hits and a RBI.

Freshman Hannah Haydel picked up her third career win, but was unable to preserve the victory after coming in to pitch in the fifth inning. Junior Katie Moulder started in the circle, giving up two earned runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Moulder struck out seven and had four walks.

The Colonels took command in the game early, scoring a run in each of the first three frames before plating three in the fourth. Phillips drove in the first run on an infield single, followed by a sacrifice fly by Andrus. Miller made the game 3-1 in the third on a RBI double.

Nicholls broke it open in the next inning, recording four hits to take a 6-1 lead. A base hit by Andrus and a double to left by Marcet brought home the first two, then Phillips close out the inning with a RBI on a groundout.

But Alcorn refused to go away quietly as Chamara Moore, who went 4-for-5, made Nicholls pay after two errors in the fifth loaded the bases with a base-clearing double. After a 1-2-3 inning by Nicholls, Alcorn struck again with the bases full, getting a triple to cap a four-run frame, taking an 8-6 lead.

With five outs remaining, Andrus and Marcet singled before Bennett laced a double to make it a one-run game. Phillips tied the game on a single, and on the same play, Bennett scored on an error by the catcher. Maggie Bryan then gave Nicholls a two-run cushion at 10-8 with a RBI groundout.

In the top of the seventh, Alcorn put two runners on; however, Haydel notched her fourth strikeout to end the game. Haydel worked three innings, giving up three earned runs our four hits.
