The Nicholls State University softball team held Southern to one hit and the offense scored 10 runs in the final two frames to pick up a 11-0 run-rule victory in five innings Wednesday night at the Colonel Softball Complex.

Nicholls ups its record to 11-16 on the year, which includes three wins against Southern. The Lady Jaguars have struggled the season, posting a 1-27 record.

Freshman Hannah Haydel (4-6) earned the win, tossing four innings while giving up only an infield single in third inning. Haydel had one strikeout and walked none.

The Colonels finished with eight hits and took advantage of six errors by the Lady Jaguars. After coming up empty in the first inning with the bases loaded and no outs, Nicholls took a 1-0 lead in the second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Haley Parkerson

In the third, Leah Andrus led off the inning with a base hit and moved to second on an error, which was Southern's first of three in the frame. Nicholls went up 2-0 after another mishap by the defense before Courtney Vanlandingham ripped a double to rightcenter, bringing home two.  Ashley Bertot, who extended her hitting streak to nine games, made it 6-0 Colonels on a sacrifice fly.

Following a quick 1-2-3 inning by Haydel, Nicholls tacked on another five-spot in the fourth, using three hits and three errors. Maggie Bryan, who made an outstanding diving grab behind the plate in Southern's at-bat, capped off the scoring with a two-run single, giving Nicholls a commanding 11-0 lead.

Katie Moulder came in to pitch the fifth, striking out two to end the game in five innings.

Danielle Phillips led Nicholls with two hits, while Bryan, Vanlandingham and Alaina Guidry drove in two each.

Nicholls returns to action this weekend with a three-game conference set against Stephen F. Austin. Saturday's doubleheader at the Colonel Softball Complex will begin at 1 p.m.
