Lions Get The Best Of Colonels Late In 3-2 Loss To SLU

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team had 12 hits on Friday against Southeastern Louisiana, but stranded 13 runners on base and scored just two runs on the night in a 3-2 loss to the Lions in 13 innings.

Five Nicholls (14-14, 1-4 SLC) players had two hits in the game, as Tyler Duplantis and Cody Dufrene were the only two to drive in runs, followed by Matt Richard, Leo Vargas and Brandon Jackson. Nicholls struck out 11 times to Lion pitching, as SLU's Tate Scioneaux went 9.2 innings and struck out nine of the 11 in the no-decision.

Kory Delange had about a solid start as you could ask for, pitching eight innings giving up two runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts in the no-decision. Jordan McCoy (1-1) was nearly unhittable until the final inning, as he gave up just one run on two hits with three strikeouts pitching the final five.

Two singles by SLU in the top of the 13th put runners at second and third for the Lions, and a walk loaded the bases putting pressure on the Colonels after head coach Seth Thibodeaux was ejected from the game after arguing with the umpires. A passed ball by new catcher Chase Garrett allowed the Lions to score putting Southeastern up 3-2, and would not score again getting out of the inning.

After a pitching change to Mason Klotz (4) from Dylan Hills (2-1) who pitched 2.1 innings after Scioneaux, the Southeastern pitcher walked Keith Cormier and Seth Stevens to put two on with one out. However, the two would never advance any further as a strikeout and fly ball to right field ended the game.

The Lions wasted little time getting to Delange, getting two hits after a line drive out to put runners at second and third to open the first. Fortunately, the 6-7 righty got the next two batters in order with a shallow pop fly to Leo Vargas at short, striking out the final batter swinging to get out of the inning.

The top of the SLU order came back to rear its heads again in the top of the third, as two singles put runners at the corners with no outs. Again, Delange and the defense was able to get out of the tight spot, as a short grounder kept the runner at third while getting the force out at second for the first out. A sacrifice bunt attempt was too strong in the next at bat and Delange was able to toss the ball back to Dufrene at the plate for the tag for the second out. The last out came on a fielder's choice grounder to Lyons for the final out of the inning.

The Colonels finally got a runner past second for the first time in the bottom half of the inning, as David Zorn got hit with one out on the board, but advanced to third after a Vargas single to right field putting runners at the corners with two outs. Unfortunately, a sharply hit grounder right back to the pitcher ended the inning with the game still scoreless.

After a couple of close calls, Southeastern finally scratched out a run in the fourth going up 1-0 on a single up the middle bringing in a base runner from second to take the lead. The Lions would get another runner to second after a sacrifice bunt, but no further after grounder to second base ended the frame.

Jackson led off the fourth with a single up the middle, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Keith Cormier. Duplantis literally tore the cover off the ball in his at bat, drilling a single up the middle to score Jackson to tie the game at 1-1, advancing to second on the throw home. A single by Stevens through the left side put runners on the corners with one out, as Dufrene hit a deep fly ball out allowing Duplantis to score from third to give the Colonels their first lead of the game 2-1. A grounder to second ended the Colonel fourth.

A barely hit single to Jackson at third put one on in the Southeastern seventh, with a stolen base and sacrifice bunt moving the runner to third with just one out. A wild pitch scored the run tying the game at 2-2, but didn't get anything else to close the inning.

With two outs in the tenth, back-to-back singles through the left side by Vargas and Richard put two on with Lyons up next at the plate. It was the first serious threat for either team in the extra innings as SLU switched to Hills, but a deep fly ball caught by the right fielder ended the threat with the game still tied.

McCoy came on in the ninth and retired the side in order, matching that feat three more times with five strikeouts in his four innings of work on the mound in relief.

In the 12th, Dufrene singled to the third baseman to open the inning, with Cole Wilson coming on to pinch run. Mike Barba came on to pinch hit for Zorn, but popped up on the bunt attempt for the first out of the inning. Richard followed that up with a single through the left side to put two on, with a line drive out by Vargas keeping everyone still. Lyons singled to the shortstop to load the bases, and with a 3-2 count, Jackson struck out looking to end the biggest threat for either team on the night.

The finale of the series is set for 2 p.m. Saturday back at Alumni Field in Hammond.
