Colonels Host Cajuns Tuesday In Final Non-Conference Home Contest

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team returns home on Tuesday night to take on the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns at 6:30 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux.

The game can be heard on the radio on KTIB 640 AM in Thibodaux, and online at ThibodauxOnline.com. Live streaming video of the game will be provided through Colonels All-Access, with live stats available as well at the start of the game at GeauxColonels.com.

Tuesday's game marks the final non-conference home game of the season for the Colonels, as the final two will both be in New Orleans taking on UNO next week and Tulane in May. Nicholls' four-game home stand will be the last before the team embarks on an eight-game road swing after this weekend's series against McNeese State in Thibodaux.

For another week the Colonels are looking to rebound after a tough weekend in conference play, as the team continues to search for a Southland series win with just five remaining on the season. This past weekend, the Colonels were two innings away from claiming the series after splitting the first two games, but the Central Arkansas Bears rallied to score four runs in the final two innings to earn a 7-6 walk-off win.

The loss dropped Nicholls to 17-20 on the season and 2-10 in league play in the process. So far this season, the Colonels are 4-9 in games decided by one run, losing seven games in Southland play alone by that margin.

Another crushing loss overshadowed what was a relatively productive weekend by the team at the plate, as Nicholls outhit the Bears in two of the three games including garnering double-digit hits for the first time in four games on Sunday with 11.

Playing through pain and injuries is something the Colonels will battle through with just 18 games left in the season, but there was room for hope as Matt Richard was put back into the lineup for the weekend after sitting out with lingering back issues. Richard averaged .500 for the weekend at the plate with six hits, five runs scored and three stolen bases. The three stolen bases increased his season total to 14, which is now second in the conference.

Another player that had a breakout week was Mike Barba who currently has the team's longest hit and reached base streak which stand at four games each. The outfielder also had six hits with two doubles and an RBI. Senior catcher Cody Dufrene continues to drive in runs with four last week to bring his team-leading total up to 28 on the year.

On the mound, Kory Delange was the only starter to earn a win after holding the Bears to just one run, and got a great pitching performance from Taylor Byrd in the no-decision after giving up just two hits in his start. However, walks and untimely errors proved to be costly as Nicholls had nine and four, respectively, which expedited the Bear rally. Jordan McCoy picked up his seventh save of the season to tie his total from last year, but also took the loss on Sunday in the UCA comeback.

Nicholls lost to Louisiana-Lafayette 5-1 back at the end of February in Lafayette, as the Cajuns will go with sophomore left-hander Kody Smith while Grant Borne will get his second crack at ULL after pitching five solid innings giving up one run on three hits in the first meeting.

The Ragin Cajuns have six players hitting above .300 on the season led by Tyler Girouard's .392 clip. As a team ULL is batting .312 while its pitching staff is holding opponents to a .273 average with a 4.46 staff ERA.
