HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State handed the Nicholls softball team its first sweep in Southland Conference play as the Colonels were defeated 11-2 in five innings Sunday at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
The Colonels (19-24, 9-11) had just five hits in the loss, while Sam Houston (28-19, 14-7) pounded out 13.
Courtney Vanlandingham led Nicholls at the plate going 2-for-2 with a solo home run, while
Leah Andrus chipped in with a RBI single in the first.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Sam Houston put up a four-spot, getting a 2-run double by Kim Damian and a 2-run homer from Tiffany Castillo. Vanlandingham's home run to center in the second made it 4-2 Sam Houston, but the Bearkats went back up 5-2 in the bottom of the frame on a single by Jessica Slater.
In the bottom of the third, Sam Houston exploded for six runs on six hits, including four doubles. Nicholls managed only a single by Vanlandingham the rest of the way before the game ended in five innings.
Ashton Bennett (11-11) took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits in two innings of work. In relief,
Katie Moulder surrendered six runs on five hits in 0.2 innings, while
Hannah Haydel tossed 1.1 innings and gave up two hits.
At the plate,
Danielle Phillips extended her hitting streak to four-games with a base hit and
Brittany Marcet added a double to increase her on-base streak to 16.
The Colonels will wrap up their road schedule next weekend with a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
