CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Nicholls softball team picked up a much needed sweep in its doubleheader against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as the Colonels won 4-1 and 5-2 Saturday at Chapman Field.
Nicholls ups its record to 21-24 on the year and 11-11 in conference play. The Islanders fall to 9-37 overall and 4-17 in the SLC. The Colonels will go for their first conference series sweep with the finale set for Sunday at 12 p.m.
Game 1 – Nicholls 4, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 1
The Colonels plated all four runs in the third inning and freshman
Hannah Haydel tossed five shutouts innings as Nicholls won 4-1 over the host Islanders.
In the decisive frame, the Colonels recorded five of their seven hits.
Leah Andrus put Nicholls on the board when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and
Danielle Phillips, who finished 2-for-3 with two runs, made the score 3-0 with a 2-run single up the middle.
Ashton Bennett capped off the inning with a RBI single to short.
Haydel kept the score 4-0 after five innings, giving up three hits while striking out six.
Katie Moulder tossed the final two innings, surrendering one unearned run on two hits.
Freshman
Haley Parkerson also had two hits for the Colonels and scored once.
Game 2 – Nicholls 5, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2
The Colonels built a 5-0 lead and received another solid outing in the circle, getting six innings from senior
Ashton Bennett as Nicholls swept the doubleheader with a 5-2 victory.
Bennett not only held the Islanders scoreless on four hits, but the senior gave Nicholls 2-0 lead in the second with her fifth home run of the season. In the circle, she finished with three strikeouts and a walk.
In the third,
Colleen Levy drew a bases loaded walk to put Nicholls up 3-0. The following inning, Phillips knocked in two on a single to center. Phillips finished the day with four hits and four RBIs.
Corpus scored a pair of runs in the seventh before Haydel closed out the game with her second inning of relief.
