Colonels Drop Opener 13-1 To Islanders

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – Looking to begin its third conference series of the year on a better note, the Nicholls State University Baseball team gave up six runs in two of the first three innings to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders while getting just one run on six hits in a 13-1 loss on Friday in Thibodaux.

Nicholls (15-16, 1-6 SLC) was out of it from the beginning and it only got worse late as the Islanders led throughout (17-12, 4-3) producing 13 runs on 16 hits on the night, scoring six runs in the second and third innings while getting four more in the seventh to go up nine. The Colonels stranded 15 runners over the course of the game, with multiple innings leaving the bases loaded unable to produce a multi-run inning.

Mike Suk (1-3) took the loss allowing a season-high six runs on nine hits with three walks and six strikeouts in five innings, but the staff as a whole struggled as Grant Borne, Kelby Langston, Chris Miller and Jacob Rodrigue all allowed hits with Borne allowing four runs on three hits with Miller giving up the final three on just one hit in just a third of an inning. The staff also wasn't helped out by a defense that had four errors on the night to extend innings.

Nicholls got five hits off of TAMCC starter Trevor Foss (5-3), and did not register another one until the ninth as the Islanders combined to strikeout 12 Colonels walking nine. Brandon Jackson was the only Nicholls player to register multiple hits going 2-for-4 with a double and run scored, as Philip Lyons, Keith Cormier, Tyler Duplantis and Cody Dufrene had one.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi got to Suk early and went up big scoring five runs on five hits in the top of the second, including a two-RBI single and triple in the frame as an error kept the inning going with two outs on the board. They struck again in the third getting a run on three hits to go up 6-0 just three innings in.

Nicholls didn't get its first hit until the third inning, with just two in the game heading to the fourth. The Colonels stranded two runners in the in the previous inning and had a bases-loaded opportunity in the fourth, plating just one run on a walk to make it 6-1.

Nicholls put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth, getting a single from Lyons through the right side and a double from Jackson to left to put two in scoring position. In the sixth the Colonels loaded the bases again, but came up fruitless in the inning leaving the score the same.

With two outs in the seventh, the wheels fell off as the Islanders got four runs on three hits accompanied by two Nicholls errors to go up 10-1 and take charge for good.

Corpus Christi's Eric Weiss went 3-for-4 with four RBI and run scored, with six Islanders having two or more during the contest.

Game two of the series will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux.
