Colonels Unable To Convert Opportunities In 2-1 Loss

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team regrouped after a crushing loss on Friday night to outhit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, but the Colonels could not capitalize on a bevy of opportunities with runners on base and fell 2-1 to the Islanders at Ray E. Didier Field.

Nicholls (15-17, 1-7 SLC) outhit the Islanders (18-12, 5-3) 11-9 over the course of the game, but Nicholls left ten runners on base in the contest, none more important than in the ninth when a pinch hitting David Zorn reached second after a bunt single and error with one out. Unfortunately it was like much of the game, and the weekend, as the next two batters struck out and popped out in order to end the game giving A&M-Corpus Christi the series.

Nicholls squandered another quality start from Kory Delange (4-3) as the senior right-handed pitcher went seven full innings, scattering eight hits and allowing two runs, one earned, with two walks and six strikeouts. Unlike Friday night, Nicholls used just two pitchers on Saturday as Jordan McCoy made his 18th appearance of the season and pitched the final two innings giving up just one hit with five strikeouts.

First baseman Seth Stevens led the team at the plate going 3-for-4 with an RBI double, followed by catcher Cody Dufrene who went 2-for-4 and Tyler Duplantis going 2-for-4 afternoon.

Islanders starter Trevor Belicek (4-1) earned the win for the visitors, giving up just one run on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work, as O'Shea Dumes and Jacob Dorris (7) combined to give up three hits with four strikeouts. Brad Porras and Zach Taylor each had two hits for A&M-Corpus Christi, with Taylor driving in a run.

Just as they did on Friday, the Islanders struck first getting a double and single down the right field line to go up 1-0 with no outs in the top of the second. Fortunately, Delange settled down and struck out the next three batters to end the inning.

Stevens got the first hit of the game for Nicholls in the bottom half of the inning with a single through the right side with two outs. Dufrene followed that up with a single to right field, but on the first hop the Islander outfielder threw out Stevens at third to end the inning.

A bizarre third inning put the Islanders up 2-0, as a throwing error by Brandon Jackson at short on an infield single allowed an unearned run to score. Nicholls had just turned a double play with an outfield assist by Matt Richard in center and if not for the error the Colonels might have gotten out of the inning unscathed.

In the bottom half of that same inning, Mike Barba was hit by a pitch and a single by Leo Vargas put two on with one out. Hoping to build some momentum, Philip Lyons grounded into the 6-3 double play to end the threat leaving one on base.

Stevens came through with a clutch RBI double in the fourth, cutting the AMCC lead in half with one out driving in Cormier who got on with a walk. With Duplantis at third, who got on with an infield single, and Stevens at second, Dufrene was walked to load the bases. After a Barba strikeout, Richard was 1-2 in the count after swinging at a pitch with Duplantis charging for home being was called out at the plate to end the inning.

Nicholls got out of a big jam in the sixth, turning a 6-4-3 double play with a runner at third after Texas A&M-Corpus Christi earned two hits in the inning. AMCC returned the favor in bottom half of the inning, as Stevens had his third hit of the game after Cormier singled as well to put two on, but Nicholls couldn't convert leaving the two stranded.

The series finale on Sunday is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch in Thibodaux.
