The Opening Serve
The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team opens a three-match Southland Conference home set this week against Houston Baptist, New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana after spending the last two matches on the road. The Colonels dropped matches to Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian to fall to 3-11 on the season and 0-4 in SLC play. Nicholls is hoping to snap a five-match losing skid this week, as the team has not earned a victory since Sept. 14.
Kayla Burling leads the team with a 3.27 kills per set average and 157 total kills on the year, while
Marlee Bean and
Ainsley Marroccoli average 4.38 assists per set and
Kalynn Egea's 3.65 digs per set.
The Opposition
Houston Baptist
The HBU Huskies are 5-10 on the season and 0-3 in conference after dropping matches to Sam Houston State and Lamar over the weekend. The Huskies have four players with at least 100 kills on the season, led by Madeline Gaffney's 2.81 kills per set. Setter Kayla Armer has 567 assists and averages over 10 per set, while four players have over 1000 digs.
New Orleans
The Privateers are just 2-14 in their first season in the Southland and have struggled with a 0-4 league mark. UNO does not have a player with over 100 kills and averages just 8.25 per set as a team. However, Lauren Levy has 176 digs and averages 3.38 when on the floor.
Southeastern La.
The Lady Lions are having a strong season with their 6-10 record, but Southeastern La. ran into a buzzsaw in its first two weeks of conference action with losses to Northwestern State, SFA, UCA and ORU. Tiffany Thomas leads SLU with 3.30 kills per set, while Mikayla Shippy averages 9.44 assists and Todd Morgan's 4.35 digs per set.
Series Records
This will be the third ever meeting between the Colonels and Huskies, as Nicholls won the last meeting 3-2 in a tournament in Lafayette in 2011. With New Orleans finally joining the league, the Colonels will get a few more home matches against the Privateers, as Nicholls has won the last two meetings and four of the last five in Thibodaux. Against the Lady Lions, the Colonels put their six-match winning streak to the test, as Nicholls has won 13 of the last 18 against SLU.
