Senior Brittany Marcet's walkoff double gave Nicholls a 5-4 win in game two against NSU

Final Stats 2 THIBODAUX, La. – After letting an early slip away in game one, the Nicholls State University softball team received a walkoff RBI double from senior
Brittany Marcet in game two as the Colonels salvaged a split in Saturday's doubleheader against Northwestern State, winning the night cap 5-4 after dropping the first game, 6-4.
The Colonels (18-31, 8-13) and Northwestern State (23-20, 11-10) will play the rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will also serve as Senior Day as the Colonels will honor seniors Marcet,
Katie Holmes and
Katie Moulder following the contest.
In game one, Nicholls score three runs in the first and led until the sixth when NSU plated three of their own to take a 5-4 lead. The teams traded runs in the next two half innings to make the final.
The Colonels had six hits in the loss, getting two each from
Haley Parkerson and
Colleen Levy.
Kayla Prater started off the scoring in the first on a base hit to right, and Levy ripped a 2-run double to left center for an early 3-0 lead.
Kellye Kincannon put NSU on the board with a 2-run homer to right in the fourth off Colonel starter
Jackie Johnson. Johnson tossed 5.2 innings, pitching four before re-entering the game in the sixth. She allowed two earned, walked five and struck out four.
In the Lady Demon sixth, a double tied the game before a wild pitch by Colonel reliever
Taylor Hastings allowed a run to score. NSU ended the scoring with a RBI single by Cali Burke.
The teams traded unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh before Nicholls was retired in order to end the game.
In the night cap, Nicholls let another early lead slip away as the game was tied 4-4 after six and a half innings, but Marcet smoked a ball to left center and pinch runner
Olivia Van Hook scored all the way from first base to give Nicholls a walkoff win.
The Colonels had eight hits in the win, led by Levy with two.
Hannah Haydel (6-12) continued her strong pitching in conference play, tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts.
Northwestern State scored a run in the top of the first, but Nicholls answered with another three-run first inning.
Danielle Phillips ripped a shot up the middle to plate
Taylor Terrio, and
Cari Spain sent a rocket past the Demon shortstop to drive in two runs.
With Nicholls leading 4-2 in the sixth, NSU tied the game with two runs on two hits. Brittney Jones drove in a run before pinch-hitter Micayla Sorosiak brought in one on a groundout.
After Haydel sat the Lady Demons down in order in the seventh, Levy kept Nicholls alive with a two-out single to right. Colonel head coach
Angel Santiago went to the bench to put in Van Hook as a pinch runner, and the moved paid dividends as the freshman was able to score the game-winning run on Marcet's double.
Shelby Sells took the loss, allowing one earned run on four hits in six innings of work.
