THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team defeated Northwestern State 3-0 on Saturday at Stopher Gymnasium, securing the team's first victory over a Southland Conference opponent.
The Colonels (5-10, 1-1 SLC) fell to Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, but rebounded against the Demons (4-11, 1-1 SLC) on Saturday behind a balanced offensive attack.
Nicholls took the first two sets convincingly with identical scored of 25-19. Northwestern State answered the bell and kept things interesting in the third set. The Demons held a 9-7 lead and a 20-18 lead before the Colonels were able to tie the game at 25. Northwestern State took a 26-25 lead, but Nicholls answered with three straight points to win the set and the match.
Kali Schwartz led the Colonels offensively with 15 kills on the day while
Kaci Eaton and
Stephanie Tobison each added 12.
Ainsley Marroccoli had 32 assists and
Alyse Barclay added 17.
Kalynn Egea had a team-high 32 digs.
Stacey DiFrancesco and Mackenzie Neely led the Demons with eight kills, while Baily Martin had a team-leading 21 digs. Emily Johnson and Natalie Jaeger each contributed 12 assists on the day.
The Colonels will host Sam Houston State on Thursday Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Stopher Gymnasium.
