SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Nicholls State University women's soccer team defeated the University of the Incarnate Word 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in San Antonio with two scores in the final ten minutes of play.
The Colonels (6-5, 2-2 SLC) were tied 1-1 with the Cardinals (0-9, 0-2 SLC) until the 80
th minute, when two quick scores gave secured the win.
Both teams were scoreless until the 37
th minute when
Miranda O'Neil found
Jess Coates for the first goal of the match. The Colonels took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Incarnate Word responded 14 minutes into the second period when Sarah Johnson took a pass from Alexis Santos and found the back of the net.
In the 80
th minute, Coates sent a pass to
Emily Werenskiold who dribbled from 30 yards out, passed a Cardinal defender and fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the net for her first goal of the season. Just five minutes later déjà vu struck as Coates found Werenskiold for her second goal of the match to seal the victory.
Coates now has a team-high five assists on the season, while Werenskiold is now third on the team in goals (2) and second in assists (3).
Johnson led Incarnate Word offensively with seven shots and one score on Sunday. Santos has the only assist for the Cardinals on the afternoon.
Haley Golden (1-0) earned her first start and first win of the season, facing 14 shots with four saves and one goal allowed. Golden has a team-high .833 save percentage this year.
Karly Brightwell and Heather Kowalik split time in the net and combined to face 13 shots with five saves and three goals allowed.
The Colonels will return to Texas on Friday as they take on Lamar University at 7 p.m. in Beaumont.
