MOBILE, Ala. – Sophomores
Kieran Cronin and
Bernard Wezeman claimed victories in singles against South Alabama, but not before the Jaguars clinched the team victory as the Nicholls State University men's tennis team was defeated, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Colonels dropped the doubles point and the Jaguars clinched the match by winning the No. 2, 5 and 1 courts in straight sets. Wezeman put Nicholls on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Manuel Belda on the No. 3 court, and Cronin came away with a win over Olivier Gingras at No. 6, winning both sets 7-5.
On the No. 4 court,
Evan Karatzas came out with a 7-5 win in the first set over Tuki Jacobs. But after falling in the second set, Karatzas came up short in the tiebreaker, 10-8.
"Great effort by some of the guys against a very good south Alabama team today and it's gratifying to watch these guys get better every match and grow as players and individuals," said
Meenakshi Sundaram, Nicholls men's tennis head coach. "We don't have everyone on board yet and if we do, things will look good for this team."
The Colonels will make their home debut on Feb. 14 against Tyler Junior College. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
