THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team may have played their best defensive match of the year on Saturday, but were unable to overcome one of the top teams in the Southland Conference, falling 3-0, against a talented Central Arkansas squad.
The Colonels (5-12, 0-6 SLC) held an advantage in all three sets against the Sugar Bears (10-10, 6-2 SLC), but UCA always found a way to storm back.
Nicholls was up, 17-16, late in set one, but Central Arkansas went on a 9-3 run to close out the frame, 25-20.
The Colonels led, 7-6, early in the second, before the Sugar Bears caught fire, taking a 25-15 set win.
Trailing by six points late in the third, Nicholls put together a six-point run to tie the set at 19 apiece. The teams traded points for the remainder of the set and Central Arkansas came out on top, 25-23.
The Colonels finished with a season-high 16 blocks in the loss.
Kaci Eaton paced Nicholls in digs (17), kills (11), blocks (four) and service aces (two).
Alyse Barclay had 25 assists to lead the Colonels.

Sydney Lerille each contributed four blocks on the day. Schwartz and Weimer also added six and five kills respectively.
Stephanie Tobison totaled 14 digs and
Anna Niederhauser finished with 10.
Amy South (31 assists), Allie Kemp (19 digs), Samantha Anderson (nine kills) and Nicole Peters (seven blocks) led the Sugar Bears in the victory.
Nicholls will next host McNeese at noon on Saturday, Oct. 17. The Colonels will battle the league-leader, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22 in Thibodaux.
