Colonels Fall at New Mexico, 83-43

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Playing on the road for the first time this season, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team enjoyed an early lead against New Mexico, but the Lobos closed out the first quarter on a 21-4 run and never looked back as the Colonels fell, 83-43, Tuesday night at The Pit.
 
Nicholls (1-2) shot just 30 percent in the loss and had 26 turnovers. New Mexico (3-1) hit 42 percent from the field and dominated in rebounds, 57-24, to remain perfect against the Colonels all-time with a 3-0 record. The win also extended the Lobos' home winning streak to 15 games.
 
Freshman Airi Hamilton was the lone Colonel to reach double figures, scoring 11 points in the loss. Cassidy Barrios added nine, as did LiAnn McCarthy who made her first appearance since Feb. 19, 2013.
 
Bryce Owens led the Lobos with 15 points, while Jaisa Nunn came off the bench for 14.
 
The Colonels jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first three minutes of the game, getting a 3-pointer and a jumper from Hamilton. The Lobos turned the ball over six times in the first five minutes, but the Colonels were unable to capitalize.
 
New Mexico took the lead at the six-minute mark and then doubled up the Colonels at 20-10 right before the end of the quarter. The period ended with the Lobos leading 22-10 as UNM held Nicholls to 25 percent shooting and caused nine turnovers.
 
After Nicholls fell behind by 18, McCarthy drained her second 3-pointer of the night to make the score 33-18. However, the Lobos would close out the final five minutes of the half with a 15-4 run to take a commanding 48-22 advantage into the break. The Lobos out rebounded Nicholls, 32-9, helped by a 14-0 margin on the offensive end.
 
Things did not get much better for the Colonels in the second half as they as were held scoreless in the final five minutes of the third to fall behind, 64-29. In the fourth, UNM doubled up the Colonels en route to the 40-point victory.
 
The Colonels will play their next two contests in the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Tournament, hosted by Southern Miss, on Friday and Saturday. Nicholls will open up against Samford on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
