MONROE, La. – Despite a career-high 25 points from freshman
Cassidy Barrios, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team never led at ULM Saturday night as the Warhawks used a big second quarter to hand the Colonels a 69-57 loss at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
With the loss, Nicholls slipped to 2-6 on the year and 7-41 all-time against ULM. The win upped ULM's record to 5-3 and kept the Colonels winless on the road this season at 0-3.
Barrios missed just two shots for the game, going 7 of 8 from the field, 4 of 5 from 3-point range and 7 of 8 at the free throw line.
Hope Pawlowski also reached double figures with 12 points off the bench.
Nicholls trailed 10-7 after a low-scoring first quarter, but the home team outscored the Colonels 22-10 in the second for a commanding 32-17 lead at the half.
ULM maintained the 15-point lead after the third before Nicholls made a run in the fourth. Down 56-41, the Colonels used a 9-0 run to pull within six at 56-50 with six minutes remaining in the game. Pawlowski scored three baskets to start the spurt and Barrios drained a 3-pointer to cap it. But Nicholls was never able to come any closer as ULM held on for the victory.
The Colonels shot 35 percent from the field in the loss and were out rebounded 40-30. Alayshia Hunter led ULM with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Ashley Aune chipped in with 12 points.
The Colonels return home for their next matchup, taking on Jacksonville State on Friday, Dec. 18. Tipoff at Stopher Gym is scheduled for 6 p.m.
