Stony Brook Spoils Season-Opener for Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team could not muster enough offense to keep pace with a hot-hitting Stony Brook squad, falling 6-0 on Friday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field.

The Colonels (0-1) had a rocky start to their 2015 season as the Seawolves (1-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings. Stony Brook added three more runs in the top of the fifth, pushing their advantage to five, and prevented Nicholls from putting a single man on base to that point in the contest. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth when Alex Shermer earned a walk that the Colonels were able to reach first base.

The Seawolves scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning to take a 6-0 lead. Tanner Vandevere tripled in the bottom of the frame, Joey Morales was hit by a pitch and Justin Holt walked to load the bases, but Stony Brook was able to escape the inning and come away with the win.

Marc Frazier (0-1) tossed four innings for Nicholls, giving up five hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks.

Tyler Honahan (1-0) picked up the win, fanning three batters in six innings with two walks and just one hit allowed.

Cole Peragine led Stony Brook offensively, going 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs on the afternoon. Jack Parenty and Andruw Gazzola each contributed two hits for the Seawolves, who batted .273 as a team.

Vandevere was a bright spot for the Colonels, hitting 2-for-3 with a triple in the loss. Seth Stevens recorded the only other Nicholls hit with a single through the middle. The Colonels were just 3-for-29 at the plate in the game.

Nicholls will host Stony Brook at 1 p.m. tomorrow and at 11 a.m. on Sunday in the series finale. Both games can be heard on KTIB 640 AM locally in Thibodaux.
