Mother Nature Forces 1-1 Draw on Saturday Night

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Nicholls State University baseball team was forced to end its game with Southern Miss in a 1-1 draw on Saturday night after over an hour of weather delay.

The Golden Eagles (3-3-1) got on the board early when Matt Durst notched a single to center field, bringing Connor Barron home in the top of the first inning. The Colonels (4-1-1) answered in the third frame when Darius Knight singled to center, scoring Joey Morales.

The two teams battled through three scoreless innings before Mother Nature took a stranglehold on the contest. In the top of the seventh, Grant Borne tagged Chuckie Robinson in a rundown after a pickoff attempt, earning the first out of the inning. Borne proceeded to strike out the next two Golden Eagle batters. On the final pitch of the inning, with rain streaming down on the field, Breck Kline struck out swinging, lost his grip on his bat in mid-swing and sent it flying into the stands narrowly missing two spectators. Moments later the game was postponed and eventually called after rain continued to pour onto the field.

Because the contest officially ended in a tie, neither pitcher received a decision.

Borne tossed seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and fanned five Southern Miss batters.

James McMahon threw six innings, surrendering one run on two hits with eight strikeouts.

Knight led Nicholls offensively, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Morales registered the only run for the Colonels.

Durst went 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Golden Eagle offense and Barron scored one run for the squad.

Weather permitting, Nicholls will take on Troy at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday before returning to Louisiana for a battle with Southern University at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Baton Rouge. Sunday's game will be broadcast live on KNSU 91.5 FM and air on Cox Sports Television.
