Trojans Spoil Tournament-Finale for Nicholls Baseball

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Nicholls State University baseball team had a rough ending to a roller coaster of a week, falling 10-2 against Troy University in the Cox Diamond Invitational tournament finale at the Vince J. Whibbs Sr. Community Maritime Park.

The Colonels (4-2-1) had a wild week, defeating No. 4 LSU on their home field in Baton Rouge before traveling to Pensacola, Fla. for matchups with North Florida, Southern Miss and Troy. Nicholls defeated the Ospreys 4-3 on Friday, were forced into a 1-1 tie with the Golden Eagles after poor weather conditions on Saturday night and fell to the Trojans (5-2) on Sunday.

Troy took advantage of a Colonel error in the opening inning, jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back. Righty Justin Sinibaldi opened the game with consecutive strikeouts before Logan Hill stepped to the plate. Hill made contact, sending the ball to second for what should have been the third and final out of the frame. A fielding error allowed Hill to reach first and the inning was extended. The Trojans capitalized, notching two doubles and two singles to send five runners home and take an early stranglehold on the game.

Troy added a run in the second to take a 6-0 lead.

Christian Correa put Nicholls on the board in the third inning with a single through the left side, scoring Justin Holt.

The Trojans chipped in a run in top of the fourth before Marc Frazier answered with a solo homerun blast in the bottom of the frame.

Troy added runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth to take a 10-2 lead and seal the game.

Sinibaldi (1-1) took the loss, allowing 13 hits and seven runs (two earned) with four strikeouts.

Righty Tucker Simpson (1-1) tossed five innings with five hits, two runs and fanned five Colonel batters.

Correa led Nicholls offensively with a perfect 4-for-4 outing, knocking in an RBI. Frazier was 1-for-4 with a homerun.

Nine batters registered a hit for the Trojans, while eight had two or more hits. Reid Long contributed a monster 3-for-4 day with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The Colonels will travel to Baton Rouge for a battle with Southern University at 6 p.m. on Tuesday before hosting a four-game series against Utah, slated to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday at The Did.
