Colonels Drop Saturday Doubleheader Against Islanders

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team was no match for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi pitching staff on Saturday, dropping both games of their doubleheader at Ray E. Didier Field.
 
The Colonels (9-7-1, 2-3 SLC) allowed seven runs on seven hits in game one, en route to a 7-0 loss. In game two, the Islanders (10-5, 2-0 SLC) scored four runs on six hits and completed a second shutout by a score of 4-0.
 
GAME 1
 
Nicholls and Corpus Christi were locked in a scoreless battle through five innings, but the Islanders scored three runs in the sixth and four runs in the eighth, while keeping the Colonels in check at the plate.
 
Marc Frazier (1-3) took the loss, tossing six innings and allowing three earned runs on four hits with two walks, six strikeouts and a hit batter. Zach Thiac and Cole Stapler combined to allow four runs on three hits with three walks and fanned one Corpus Christi batter in two innings of work. Jason McDonald threw the final scoreless frame and allowed no hits.
 
Matt Danton (2-2) tossed a complete game to earn the win, giving up six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.
 
Six Nicholls batters earned a hit, but no batter registered a multi-hit outing.
 
Kyle Danford led the islanders offensively with a 1-for-2 outing, three RBIs and two runs scored.
 
GAME 2
 
Corpus Christi wasted no time in game two, taking a 2-0 lead in the opening frame. The Islanders added two runs in the seventh inning and held the Colonels scoreless for a second-consecutive game.
 
Grant Borne (1-2) took the loss, throwing six innings and allowing three hits with two unearned runs, two walks and fanned five batters. Ryan Deemes tossed the final three innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
 
Trevor Belicek (2-1) allowed just one hit in seven innings on the mound, while fanning 12 Nicholls batters. Nolan Holland threw the final two frames, totaling four strikeouts with one hit allowed.
 
Justin Holt and David Zorn each went 1-for-3 in the loss.
 
Thomas Casey paced the Islanders with two runs and an RBI. Lee Jordan went 3-for-5 with a run scored.
 
The Colonels will battle Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the series-finale before hosting Lamar University at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Sunday's matchup with the Islanders will be broadcast live on KTIB 640 AM.
