Nicholls 4, Midwestern State 3 | Nicholls 4, UIW 3 SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Nicholls State University men's tennis team won its fifth and sixth consecutive matches as the Colonels defeated Midwestern State and Incarnate Word on Friday and Saturday, respectively, with a pair of 4-3 wins at the Mabry Tennis Center.
With the wins, Nicholls evens its season record to 7-7 and the victory over UIW puts the squad at 1-1 in conference.
Both matches turned out almost the same for the Colonels as they won the doubles point before taking No. 5 and 6 singles against each team. The only difference was in Friday's match against Midwestern State (10-5), the Colonels won the No. 4 singles match while on Saturday, Nicholls took the No. 2 court.
In doubles,
Evan Karatzas and
Sam Meessen won both of their matches at No. 3, while duos of
Partha Adavelly /
Lukas Clemens and
Bernard Wezeman /
Kieran Cronin split their matches.
Against Midwestern State, the Colonels' top half of the singles lineup came up empty, despite a valiant effort by Karatzas at No. 3 with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 loss to Ramon Toyos. But Cronin and
Max Sinn each won in straight sets at 5 and 6, respectively, and Wezeman came through with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Chris Norrie for the team win.
In conference play against UIW (5-13, 0-2), Cronin and Meessen cruised to straight set wins at 5 and 6, and this time, Clemens came up with the big win, defeating Josip Smoljan 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
The Colonels will close out their road trip with a conference matchup against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday, March 30. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
