NEW ORLEANS, La. – Sophomore duo
Hannah Naquin and
Callie Scull led the way for the Nicholls State University cross country team on Tuesday, winning the New Orleans Invitational with the top combined relay time.
Unlike a typical cross-country meet, Tuesday's event featured a two-person relay-style competition. Scull ran the first two-mile leg of the relay, posting a time of 13:00.8 before tagging Naquin. Scull's leg put the team in third place, just in reach of the lead. Naquin quickly made up the difference, overcoming the deficit and powering to a first-place finish. Naquin ran a 12:31.9, the second fastest leg overall. The winning combined time for Scull and Naquin was a 25:32.7.
The Colonel relay team of
Emily Sauce and newcomer
Brice Davis finished third at the meet, coming in only a minute behind Scull and Naquin. Sauce ran a leg of 13:13.3 and Davis finished in 13:29.4 for a combined total of 26:24.7.
Terrian Guaff and
Rachante Colebrook took fifth at the event, combining for a time of 30:23.4. Guaff crossed in 15:10.7, while Colebrook earned a time of 15:12.7.
On the men's side, junior
Jake Lee and sophomore
Peter Alleman led the way. Lee registered a leg of 12:30.9 and Alleman turned in a time of 11:51.0, for a combined time of 24:21.9.
The Colonels competed against Southeastern Louisiana, Southern and the host Privateers on a course that ran down Lakeshore Drive and through the surrounding UNO campus.
Nicholls will next travel to Houston, Texas for the Rice Invitational on Sept. 11, before heading to Baton Rouge for the LSU Invitational on Sept. 19.
