Nicholls Volleyball Defeats Prairie View, Falls to Houston, on Friday

HOUSTON, Texas – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team had complete control in their opening match at the Flo Hymen Collegiate Cup, earning a straight-set win over Prairie View A&M, but the Colonels came up short against Houston in the second match of the day, falling 3-0.
 
MATCH 1
 
The Colonels (4-7) made short work of the under-matched Panthers (0-11), earning victories of 25-13, 25-11 and 25-16 in a straight-set win. Nicholls trailed only once, when Prairie View A&M scored the opening point of set three.
 
Kayla Mashburn led the way with an all-around performance, earning 12 kills, eight digs and four blocks. Anna Niederhauser matched Mashburn's 12 kills, and added nine digs in the victory. Alyse Barclay finished with 25 assists, and Stephanie Tobison totaled 15 digs, both team-highs. Emily Weimer paced the squad with five blocks.
 
Jasmine Lewis (seven kills) and Ana Kiso (12 assists and nine digs) led the Panthers in the loss.
 
MATCH 2
 
The Cougars (8-2) came out on fire against the Colonels, grabbing an early advantage before cruising to a 25-16 win in set one. Nicholls was more aggressive in the second set, jumping out to a quick lead. The teams shared eight ties in a back-and-forth battle before Houston was able to pull away for a 14-10 advantage. The Colonels fought back, taking leads of 24-23 and 25-24, but the Cougars scored three straight points to steal the set. Houston finished the match with a 25-16 set-three victory.
 
Preseason All-Southland First Team selection Kaci Eaton saw meaningful time on the floor first time this season after returning from injury. Eaton paced Nicholls offensively with 10 kills. Barclay finished with a team-high 20 assists and Tobison added 13 digs. Sydney Lerille led the squad with three blocks and Mashburn contributed two service aces to lead the team.
 
Brookah Palmer (12 kills), Keandra McCardell (19 assists) and Oliva O'Dell (14 digs) spearheaded the Cougars' attack.
 
The Colonels will battle Alabama A&M in the tournament finale, tomorrow at 10 a.m.
